Saving Our Ancestors Legacy

Black History Is Not Lost, It’s Just Buried

Saving Our Ancestors’ Legacy (SOAL) is a descendant-led community-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to reclaiming America’s history. Founded in 2021 by Rachael Keri Williams and Bhakti Williams-Brown, SOAL’s first project focuses on restoring and preserving Lincoln Cemetery, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania’s oldest remaining historically Black burial ground. SOAL organizes monthly Restoration events at Lincoln Cemetery on the third Friday through Sunday of the month. Descendants, community members, neighbors, researchers, volunteers, and tourists gather to help preserve this historic site. Through the integration of hands-on conservation and technology, SOAL provides ways for people to restore, preserve, and understand the histories of our ancestors.

Action 4 Heritage 1-20-2025: SOAL recently launched an initiative to safeguard historical assets and cultural heritage. Our goal is to empower communities with the tools and technology needed for a rapid, decentralized, and community-led preservation effort. Action 4 Heritage is an emergency response to preserve the past and document the present. Policies under the 2025 presidential agenda pose a threat to the archives, narratives, and cultural heritage of Black, Indigenous, LGBTQ+, and immigrant communities. Register for updates and find out more on the SOAL linktree.
